What this site does

Doghood is an editorial operation, not a storefront. I spent over a decade tracking the pet industry across consumer forums, independent lab reports, breed-specific owner communities, and specialty retailer catalogs — the same sources a careful owner would consult, just read end to end and compared side by side. Every guide starts with the question you actually typed into the search bar, explains the jargon the first time it appears, and ends with a direct recommendation. No hedge, no filler, no pretending the specs don't matter.

How we evaluate

  • We read published lab analyses, manufacturer spec sheets, and AAFCO or ILD standards, then compare what the numbers actually say.
  • We weigh owner reports from breed forums and long-term community threads, flagging patterns that show up across hundreds of dogs.
  • We separate tiers by what changes for the dog — fit, safety, ingredients, durability — not by price alone.
  • We name the tradeoffs in every pick, because a recommendation you can't interrogate isn't one you can trust.
